2 months

Courtney went in for her two month check up on Tuesday (before the Inauguration, which we both watched for hours and hours) and I was a bit of a mess. I don't have a problem with the doctor or anything but my girl was getting her first set of shots. First of all, in the 2 weeks since our last visit, Courtney had gained 1.2 pounds and grew an inch!!! That's amazing - she grows so quickly. Anyway, the nurse gives the shots so I didn't feel overly comforted when the doctor told me it would be fine. I mean sure, she's not even in the room when my baby girl gets stabbed 3 times, she's already moved on to another screaming baby. Courtney handled it like a champ though. She had two immunizations in one leg and one in the other (the other one was oral) and would have been fine if there'd been only two shots. She seemed mildly irritated after the first 2 but let it rip after the third one. It took all I had not to completely fall apart. I felt a little comforted when the nurse told me I handled it better than most.

I don't know if it was the shots but that night and the following night, Courtney slept for 8 and 8 1/2 hours respectively. We were very excited!! The 3rd night she only slept until 4am but it was still 5 hours or so.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to my first Mom's Night Out last night! I feel so fortunate to be a member of this very special group of people.

So much for normalicy

After our 4 nights in a row, the blessed 4, we haven't been able to get that kind of sleep again. Not that we're sleeping bad or anything, 4-5 hours or so, but 8 hours is really something to write home about.

I'm getting the hang of the mama thing. We're getting out of the house more and I'm beginning to understand the different kind of cries Courtney makes. I can almost understand the "I'm tired" versus the "I'm hungry" and the ever famous "I'm FILTHY." Of course, anything at 4am is a cry for hunger but she's not always that easy to understand. Courtney has been talking a lot and making a lot of noise, just because she feels like it. We often wonder what she's trying to say, I'm sure it's very profound. An exciting milestone though is that Courtney is sitting up on her own. We'll sit with her on our legs so she's at a 45 degree angle or so. She'll pull herself up so she's sitting up, holding up her head. It's really something else. She doesn't stay like that for long and she doesn't do it all the time but our little girl is getting big and strong!

Enjoying "normalacy"

Things here seem to have turned a corner. Wait for it... We're SLEEPING!!! Courtney has slept between 6 1/2 - 8 hours IN A ROW for FOUR nights in a row!! Amazing!! As a matter of fact, she wasn't quite awake this morning, after 8 hours of sleeping, and I had to wake her up myself!! I don't even have words for what I'm feeling, it's just so exciting. And I'd like to think that I've been able to be more productive over the past several days, now that I'm all rested, although I'm not sure that's the case. I have gotten some things done around the house but the house it still a mess but we do have clean clothes and I'm even going to cook dinner tonight!!

Courtney is getting cuter by the day and is getting more fun all the time. This morning I put her on the floor with her play gym and she was smiling and squealing and "laughing" and she was SO cute. I just loved seeing her enjoying what was going on around her and actually comprehending the fun things. She did have a slight meltdown when we were done (she was in need of a diaper change) but it was amazing to see her reaction. Seven-and-a-half weeks isn't a long time but, well, it's a lifetime for Courtney and every day brings her something new and different.

I'm going to try and video tape her reaction when we play with the toy again (which will guarantee she won't like it and will cry) and hopefully I can get some video posted here.

Getting ready for bath time

She looks petrified but I swear she likes it.

How big?

Courtney went in yesterday for her 4 week appointment (at 6 weeks) and my suspicions were right, our girl is HUGE. She's up to 10lbs 7oz and is 22 inches long. She went from the 15% in weight (at 5 days old) to the 60% - she's gained almost 4 pounds!! No wonder her clothes don't fit.

The pediatrician confirmed my suspicions that Courtney does have reflux - it's an exercise in wardrobe changes. She eats, I lay her down to change her and the minute she sits up - blah, all over her clothes. She also has a little colic, which likes to rear its ugly head at 11pm and lasts until 2am or so. I think we got to sleep at 1am last night but I don't really remember, all our nights are a blur. She was supposed to get her first round of vaccinations yesterday (she can get them anytime between 6 - 8 weeks) but I wasn't mentally prepared for that at all. We'll go back in 2 weeks to have them done and hopefully I'll be prepared for that. I know, so dramatic of me and I'm not the one who's going to get stuck with a needle.

So BIG!!

When Courtney was born, she was so little that Paul and my dad had to go out and buy more newborn clothing as many of the clothes she owned were too big. I put one of those newborn outfits on last night and, much to my dismay, it didn't really fit!! I mean, she could wear it but I'm not so sure it was all that comfortable. I guess at 6 weeks, she isn't really a newborn, huh? Courtney has a doctors appointment tomorrow morning where we'll get the skinny on just how big she really is now.

Courtney is still very confused about days and nights and when exactly she should be sleeping. She's killing me. I can't keep her awake during the day and I can't get her to sleep at night. UGH!

Happy New Year!

2009 is off to a kicking start in the Holder household. The night of the 1st was ROUGH with little sleep and lots of screaming. And no, I don't mean Paul. Last night was better, more routine sleeping and waking. Unfortunately Paul wasn't able to help as he has food poisoning himself. Between Courtney spitting up all over the place - on me and on her and in my bed (right where I sleep) and Paul being all sick to his stomach, 2009 is off to an attractive start!

I did a little job searching yesterday and actually found a couple of jobs that could be interesting. I'm torn about whether or not I want to start applying for jobs yet though. I still have 4 months severance and Courtney is only 6 weeks old. I'm sure there will be interesting jobs in a couple of months (at least I hope so) but I'm not a fan of the uncertainty and it goes against my planning nature. I wonder what the odds of our winning the lottery are in the next few months.
